Taxonomy
Pleurotoma (Surcula) carpenteriana was named by Gabb (1866). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Megasurcula.

It was recombined as Surcula carpenteriana by Gabb (1869); it was recombined as Pleurotoma (Genota) carpenteriana by Raymond (1906); it was recombined as Bathytoma carpenteriana by Arnold (1908); it was recombined as Turris (Bathytoma) carpenteriana by Nomland (1916); it was recombined as Turris carpenteriana by Nomland (1917); it was recombined as Surculites (Megasurcula) carpenterianus by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Pseudotoma carpenterianus by Etherington (1931); it was misspelled as Surcula carpentariana by Ashley (1895); it was recombined as Megasurcula carpenteriana by Woodring and Bramlette (1950), Hendy (2021).
