Berycidarum mediterraneus was named by Koken (1891). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Scopelus mediterraneus by Weiler (1950); it was recombined as Myctophum mediterraneum by Holec (1975); it was recombined as Notoscopelus mediterraneus by Brzobohaty and Nolf (1996).
