Ambigaster was named by Blake and Elliott (2003). It is not extant. Its type is Monaster wandageensis.

It was assigned to Neopalaeasteridae by Blake and Elliott (2003); and to Permasteridae by Blake (2018).

Carinals in single series, ossicles not abutted; no lateral series. Marginals in single series, ossicle robust, equidimensional; marginals, adambulacrals together forming rounded arm margin.
