Platysolenites was named by Eichwald (1860). Its type is Platysolenites antiquissimus.

It was assigned to Bathysiphonidae by Loeblich and Tappan (1984), Loeblich and Tappan (1988); to Foraminiferida by McIlroy et al. (2001); and to Foraminifera by Kouchinsky et al. (2017).
