Pecten irradians was named by Lamarck (1819) [DISTRIBUTION: Nova Scotia-West Indies (Recent); New York-South Carolina (Pleistocene).]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Pecten gibbus irradians by Perry (1940); it was recombined as Chlamys (Plagioctenium) gibbus irradians by DuBar (1958); it was recombined as Chlamys irradians by DuBar (1962); it was recombined as Aequipecten irradians by Richards (1962); it was recombined as Argopecten irradians by Petuch and Roberts (2007).

Synonyms
  • Pecten borealis was named by Say (1822) [DISTRIBUTION: Pleistocene-Recent; Western; Atlantic]. It is extant.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Argopecten irradians by Hendy et al. (2008).
