Powellisetia was named by Ponder (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 650,681,899]. It is extant. Its type is Rissoa porcellana.

It was assigned to Rissoinae by Vaught et al. (1989); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rissoidae by Ávila et al. (2012).
