Orthoceras gorbyi was named by Miller (1894). It is the type species of Gorbyoceras.
It was recombined as Spyroceras gorbyi by Foerste (1928); it was recombined as Gorbyoceras gorbyi by Shimizu and Obata (1935) and Kröger (2013).
