Taxonomy
Hyphalosaurus was named by Gao et al. (1999). Its type is Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis. It was considered monophyletic by Gao and Ksepka (2008).
It was assigned to Diapsida by Gao et al. (1999); to Hyphalosauridae by Gao and Fox (2005), Gao and Li (2007), Gao and Ksepka (2008), Hou et al. (2010), Matsumoto and Evans (2010), Zhou and Wang (2010); to Choristodera by Matsumoto et al. (2013), Matsumoto et al. (2019); and to Allochoristodera by Dong et al. (2020).
It was assigned to Diapsida by Gao et al. (1999); to Hyphalosauridae by Gao and Fox (2005), Gao and Li (2007), Gao and Ksepka (2008), Hou et al.
