Thylacus was named by Conrad (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l K Maes-u]. Its type is Thylacus cretaceus.

It was assigned to Capulidae by Sohl (1964); to Calyptraeidae by Dockery (1993); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
