Auriculospongia was named by Termier and Termier (1977). Its type is Phacellopegma auriculata. It is the type genus of Auriculospongiinae.

It was assigned to Auriculospongiidae by Termier and Termier (1977); and to Auriculospongiinae by Amirhassankhani et al. (2014).
