Cerithium protextum was named by Conrad (1845) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Recent; Western Atlantic.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Acus protextus by Dall (1889); it was recombined as Terebra (Acus) protexta by Dall (1890); it was recombined as Terebra protexta by Maury (1917) and Hanna (1926).
