Bursa amphitrites was named by Maury (1917) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Pliocene; Dominican Republic.]. Its type specimen is PRI 28763, a shell (58817), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cercado de Mao - Bluff No. 3 [Cercado Fm], which is in a Tortonian offshore claystone in the Cercado Formation of the Dominican Republic.
It was recombined as Bursa (Tutufa) amphitrites by Vokes (1973).
