Columbella was named by Lamarck (1799) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes R Sepkoski's reference number: 122]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Columbellidae by Say (1822), Martin (1904), Ladd (1977), Jung (1994) and Todd (2001); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
