Cornulina was named by Conrad (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 700]. Its type is Cornulina armigera.

It was reranked as Melongena (Cornulina) by Olsson (1928).

It was assigned to Melongena by Olsson (1928); to Fasciolariidae by Palmer (1937); to Buccinidae by Harris and Palmer (1947); to Melongeninae by Adegoke (1977); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Melongenidae by Perrilliat et al. (2006).
