Strombus cancellatus was named by Lamarck (1816) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Varicospira.

It was corrected as Strombus cancellata by Lamarck (1816); it was recombined as Dientomochilus cancellatus by Eames (1950); it was recombined as Varicospira cancellatus by Eames (1952), Harzhauser (2007); it was recombined as Rimella cancellata by Hashimoto (1982); it was recombined as Dientomochilus cancellata by Skwarko and Sufiati (1994); it was recombined as Varicospira cancellata by Ladd (1972), Hendy et al. (2008), Harzhauser et al. (2009).
