Clavulina was named by d'Orbigny (1826) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1051]. It is extant. It was considered unknown by d'Orbigny (1826).

It was assigned to Verneuilinidae by Cushman (1927); to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Valvulininae by d'Orbigny (1826), Margerel (2012).
