Pterinea waylandsmithi was named by Fisher (1957). Its type specimen is NYSM 10767, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Downing Brook - Vernon, which is in a Ludlow marginal marine shale in the Vernon Formation of New York.
