Murex tricinctus was named by Brocchi (1814) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene; Northern Europe.]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Cerithium tricinctum by Nyst (1835), Wood (1848); it was recombined as Potamides tricinctus by van Regteren Altena (1965); it was recombined as Potamides (Ptychopotamides) tricinctus by Harmer (1918), Marquet (1997).
