Denazinemys nodosa
Taxonomy
Baena nodosa was named by Gilmore (1916). Its type specimen is USNM 8345, a shell (an almost complete shell), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hunter Wash head (USNM), two miles northwest of Ojo Alamo store, which is in a Campanian terrestrial horizon in the Kirtland Formation of New Mexico. It is the type species of Denazinemys.
It was recombined as Denazinemys nodosa by Lucas and Sullivan (2006), Sullivan et al. (2012), Hutchison et al. (2013), Joyce and Lyson (2015), Spicher et al. (2023).

Diagnosis
Reference | Diagnosis | |
---|---|---|
E. S. Gaffney 1972 | "This species is distinguished from all others in the rough, node-like ornamentation of the carapace, in the triangular shape of the shell, and in having the greatest breadth posterior to the inguinal notches" | |
S. G. Lucas and R. M. Sullivan 2006 | A species of Denazinemys distinguished from D. ornata by the more triangular anterior end of the carapace anterior to the third/fourth vertebral scutes (in most specimens), presence of paired anterior supramarginal scutes so that the first vertebral scute is triangular, relatively narrow (rectangular) vertebral scutes and more scalloped posterior peripheral scutes. | |
R. M. Sullivan et al. 2012 | Differs from Scabremys ornata (gilmore 1935) (see below) by the following features: carapace sub-triangular with widest dimension posteriorly; prepleurals present and contacting the first vertebral medially; first vertebral irregular hexagonal shape with greatest width posteriorly, contacting anterior second vertebral; extracervicals lateral to primary cervical, gular sub-divided; and carapace nodes irregular and not forming distinct anteroposteriorly-directed ridges. |
