Ascaphus was named by Stjenjeger (1899). It is extant. Its type is Ascaphus truei.
It was assigned to Ascaphidae by Frank and Ramus (1996) and Sanchiz (1998); and to Leiopelmatidae by Gao and Wang (2001) and Gissi et al. (2006).
