Sphaerocypraea wegeneri keenae

Taxonomy
Eocypraea (Apiocypraea) keenae was named by Woodring (1959) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene; circum-Caribbean.]. Its type specimen is USNM 562604, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Woodring Loc. 155 - Gatun Third Locks [middle Gatun Fm], which is in a Tortonian marine sandstone/siltstone in the Gatun Formation of Panama.

It was synonymized subjectively with Sphaerocypraea wegeneri by Dolin and Dolin (1981); it was recombined as Sphaerocypraea wegeneri keenae by Perrilliat (1987).

Woodring 1959Very large, elongate ovate, moderately inflated, involute, thin-shelled. Outer lip moderately wide, itsinner edge bearing about 37 teeth, which extend about a third of distance across lip. Anterior and apical parts of outer lip not preserved. Terminal ridge (on columellar side of siphonal canal) wide and swollen. Inner lip bearing a deep indentation adjoining terminal ridge, followed in succession by two short oblique teeth and a shallow indentation. Remainder of inner lip smooth, at least down to level of outer lip. Aperture very narrow. Posterior outlet evidently absent.
