Proximitra was named by Finlay (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 728,899]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Vexillinae by Squires (1984); to Volutomitridae by Squires (1987), Todd (2001); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
