Ranella elegans was named by Sowerby (1836) [DISTRIBUTION: Pleistocene-Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Ranella (Apollon) elegans by Vredenburg (1925); it was recombined as Bufonaria (Bufonaria) elegans by Beu (1987), Beu (2005); it was recombined as Bufonaria elegans by Hendy (2007).
