Nerita canrena was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene; Caribbean.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Natica canrena by Gabb (1873), Brown and Pilsbry (1913), Olsson (1922), Mansfield (1925), Weisbord (1929) and Barrios (1960); it was recombined as Natica (Naticarius) canrena by Woodring (1928), Weisbord (1962) and Perrilliat (1987); it was recombined as Naticarius canrena by Majima (1989), Massemin et al. (2009) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
