Sveltia was named by Jousseaume (1887) [COMMENTS: Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l T Plio Sepkoski's reference number: 700; EMENDED: Eocene-Recent [Hendy, 2008].]. It is extant. Its type is Voluta varricosa.

It was reranked as Cancellaria (Sveltia) by Martin (1904), Petit (1976) and Todd (2001).

It was assigned to Cancellaria by Martin (1904), Petit (1976) and Todd (2001); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cancellariidae by Wienrich (2001) and Landau et al. (2012).
