Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
E. Landing and K.E. Bartowski 1996Species of insolitotheca new genus with variable, elongate, weakly dorsally curved to straight conchs showing rounded-elliptical to reversed-triangular cross-section and transverse septa; lateral sinus in growth lines commonly present; conch surface with comarginal rugae and/or lirae that parallel growth lines; low, elliptical operculum with central to dorsocentral apex, comarginal growth lines, obtusely triangular to almost subcircular conical shield bordered by radial furrows coterminous with gentle indentation on operculum margin, peglike cardinal processes, and elongate, boss-like thickenings of lateral margin on visceral surface; clavicles absent; protoconch fusiform.

Description. -Morphologically variable conchs narrow (10"- 16"), to 7.5 cm long, straight to gently dorsally curved in lateral profile; growth lines outline short, broadly rounded ligula, then trend apically and aperturally on lateral margin to define shallow sinus or are vertical to inclined posteriorly; continuation of growth lines on dorsal surface may be convex aperturally, transverse, or bend slightly apically to define shallow dorsomedial sulcus; external surface of conch ranges from almost smooth to include comarginal lirae and/or rugae that parallel growth lines; protoconch fusiform; transverse septa present; conch cross-section variable: ranges from slightly dorsoventrally compressed ellipse with broadly convex ventral and dorsal surfaces and more narrowly rounded lateral margins to "reversed-triangular" with broadly rounded ridge on ventral surface; low, elliptical operculum with central to dorsocentral apex located as close as one third the diameter of the operculum from the dorsal margin; gently convex conical shield an obtuse triangle that may approach semicircle; shallow furrow on dorsolateral margin of conical shield confluent with shallow notch on margin of operculum; low, radial ridge forms dorsolateral margin of shallow furrows; peg-like cardinal processes with round cross-section are normal to visceral surface of operculum near dorsal margin; clavicles absent; ventrolateral and lateral margins of visceral surface thick and extend as low ridges, with gentle, radial depression immediately dorsal of lateral notch in operculum margin.
