Gilbertina was named by Morlett (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Mi Sepkoski's reference number: 700]. Its type is Gilbertina inopinata.

It was assigned to Ringiculidae by Zinsmeister (1983); and to Cephalaspida by Sepkoski (2002).
