Strombus costatus was named by Gmelin (1791) [DISTRIBUTION: Pleistocene-Recent; Florida, Caribbean.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Strombus (Macrostrombus).
It was recombined as Strombus (Macrostrombus) costatus by Petuch (1994); it was recombined as Macrostrombus costatus by Petuch (2004) and Petuch and Roberts (2007); it was recombined as Aliger costatus by Hendy et al. (2008); it was recombined as Lobatus costatus by Landau et al. (2008).
