Voluta luctator was named by Sowerby (1823) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; western Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Athleta luctator by Curry (1960); it was recombined as Athleta (Volutospina) luctator by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995).
