Albertoceras was named by Ulrich and Foerste (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Albertoceras walcotti.
It was assigned to Orthocerotidae by Ulrich et al. (1944); to Ellesmeroceratidae by Unklesbay and Young (1956), Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981); and to Ellesmerocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
