Cochlioceras was named by Eichwald (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Llde Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524]. Its type is Cochlioceras avus.

It was assigned to Baltoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981), Kröger and Evans (2011).
