Neochonetes (Sommeriella) cockbaini was named by Archbold (1993). Its type specimen is CPC 19869, a shell (Articulated specimen), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is BMR WO3, Jimba Jimba Station, which is in an Artinskian carbonate limestone in the Jimba Jimba Formation of Australia.
