Neochonetes (Sommeriella) magnus was named by Archbold (1997). Its type specimen is WAM 69.754, a valve (Ventral valve, external impression), and it is a mold. Its type locality is Scotch College Collection 179, Woolaga Creek, which is in an Artinskian shoreface sandstone in the High Cliff Sandstone Formation of Australia.
