Ellesmeroceras was named by Foerste (1921) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Ellesmeroceras scheii.
It was assigned to Orthocerotidae by Ulrich et al. (1944); and to Ellesmeroceratidae by Flower (1964), Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981), Kröger and Landing (2007), Evans (2011).
