Eremoceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Cyrtoceras syphax.
It was assigned to Cyrtendoceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1943); and to Ellesmeroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981), Kröger and Landing (2007).
