Monogonoceras was named by Ulrich et al. (1944) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren]. Its type is Monogonoceras alabamense.

It was assigned to Bassleroceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1944), Crick (1981); and to Ellesmerocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
