Taxonomy
Neochonetes (Sommeria) afanasyevae was named by Archbold (1981). Its type specimen is CPC 19902A, a valve (Dorsal valve), and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Neochonetes (Sommeriella) afanasyevae by Archbold (1982).
