Spirifer glaber was named by Sowerby (1821).

It was recombined as Anomites glaber by Martin (1809); it was recombined as Spirifer (Martinia) glaber by White (1874); it was recombined as Spirifera glabra by Etheridge (1880); it was recombined as Spirifera (Martinia) glabra by Walcott (1884); it was recombined as Martinia glabra by Waagen (1883), Keidel (1906), Fantini Sestini (1965) and Yang et al. (1990).
