Oxfordoceras was named by Ulrich et al. (1944) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren]. Its type is Oxfordoceras billingsi.

It was assigned to Orthocerotidae by Ulrich et al. (1944); to Troedssonellidae by Crick (1981); and to Orthocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
