Sigmocycloceras was named by Kobayashi (1934) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 298].

It was assigned to Troedssonellidae by Crick (1981); to Orthocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sactorthoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Kröger et al. (2007).
