Taxonomy

Palaeaster (Monaster) was named by Etheridge (1892). Its type is Ambigaster wandageensis. It is the type subgenus of Monasteridae.

It was reranked as Monaster by Gregory (1899), Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1927), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Sepkoski (2002), Blake and Elliott (2003) and Blake (2018).

It was assigned to Palaeaster by Etheridge (1892); to Palaeasteridae by Gregory (1899); to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Monasteridae by Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1927), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Blake and Elliott (2003) and Blake (2018).
