Ellinoceras was named by Balashov (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524].

It was assigned to Actinoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Actinocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
