Nautilus cookana was named by Whitfield (1892) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; Atlantic Coastal Plain.]. It is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Eutrephoceras cookana by Reeside (1924) and Spath (1927); it was recombined as Eutrephoceras cookanum by Miller and Thompson (1933), Stenzel (1940), Stenzel (1942), Miller (1947); it was recombined as Kummeloceras cookanum by Matsumoto (1983); it was recombined as Kummelonautilus cookana by Matsumoto (1984); it was corrected as Nautilus cookanum by Squires (1988); it was recombined as Kummelonautilus cookanus by Squires (2001).
