Donacoceras was named by Foerste (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg S Wenl Sepkoski's reference number: 298,1066]. Its type is Donacoceras timiskamingense. It is the type genus of Donacoceratinae.
It was assigned to Orthocerida by Teichert et al. (1964); to Donacoceratinae by Zhuravleva (1994); to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Narthecoceratidae by Crick (1981), Holland and Copper (2008).
