Narthecoceras was named by Hyatt (1895). It is the type genus of Narthecoceratidae, Narthecoceratinae.
It was assigned to Narthecoceratidae by Flower (1958), Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981) and Frey (1981); to Narthecoceratinae by Zhuravleva (1994); and to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
