Palaenectria was named by Stürtz (1893). Its type is Palaenectria devonica.

It was synonymized subjectively with Palaeostella by Schuchert (1915); it was misspelled as Palaeonectria by Blake (2018).

It was assigned to Xenasteridae by Blake (2018).
