Taxonomy
Palaeaster clarkei was named by de Koninck (1877) [Holotype was destroyed]. It is the type species of Palaeaster (Monaster).

It was recombined as Palaeaster (Monaster) clarkei by Etheridge (1892); it was recombined as Etheridgaster clarkei by Gregory (1899); it was recombined as Monaster clarkei by Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1927), Owen (1965) and Blake (2018).
