Proterocameroceras was named by Ruedemann (1905). Its type is Orthoceras brainerdi.

It was reranked as Cameroceras (Proterocameroceras) by Ruedemann (1906).

It was assigned to Cameroceras by Ruedemann (1906); to Orthocerotidae by Ulrich et al. (1944); to Proterocameratidae by Crick (1981); and to Proterocameroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Kröger and Landing (2009), Evans (2011).
