Taxonomy
Palaeaster longimanus was named by Whidborne (1896). Its type specimen is Lectotype GSM 7163-4 and is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Protarthraster.

It was recombined as Protarthraster longimanus by Spencer (1918), Owen (1965).
