Lavaloceras was named by Flower (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara O Ashg Sepkoski's reference number: 298]. It is not extant. Its type is Lavaloceras geniculatum.
It was assigned to Oncoceratida by Flower (1952); to Westonoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981); and to Discosorida by Sepkoski (2002).
